Main Contenders
Magellan: Meridian Pt, SporTrak Pro. Meridian Gold would probably be fine too (merid review).
Garmin V - expensive.
Garmin GPSmap 76s - review,
Lowrance iFinder (or other?) - poor in foliage, mega-waypoints, good use of expandable mem
What I want to know: given that Meridian has comments for waypoints, does Garmin 76?
how well does G76 work in foliage

Comments: SporTrak pro got the best accuracy rating but reports of poor track recording
SporTrak and Merid can store tracks as 30 point routes (rather than 50)
eTrex Legend voted better than sportrak by one for customizability and accuracy
SporTrak vs Garmin under trees.

Merid vs G76S
Merid has 'save track to route'
G76S has port for external antenna
16M vs 24M built-in mem
flash add-on vs NO add-on mem
160x120 vs 240x180 screen
quad helix vs quad helix + external opt
? zoom vs zoom to 5m
Garmin may have better maps?
Thread and 2 to review from search of 76s and foliage

Merid vs Sportrak
Trak more accurate (.5M vs 2.5M) but ?slower
16MB vs 9MB built-in map mem
8oz vs 6oz
Flash map upload vs 23MB built-in map upload
?user data expansion vs flash user data expansion

OziExplorer - mapping/planning utility, shareware - can register for extra functions
G7ToWin - track/waypoint management (unreviewed)
GPSmapper - edit maps for uploading to Garmin (?Magellan?)
MapSend Topo - topo maps for Magellan GPS's
National Geographic topo - saw somewhere that these are good, can't upload but can use for downloaded data
